Objetivos
The aim is to provide all citizens in Cape Town with free access to computing infrastructure and the Internet.

Activities involved: - Obtaining buy-in from the local communities; - Developing the technical solution; - Designing connectivity solution; - Designing usage and privacy policies; - Marketing and promotion of the facility within the community; - Establishment of a training programme; - Implementation of volunteers to support and promote the facility in each community.

- Number of registered users: A tracking system was implemented to track number of registered users at each facility. - Usuage of the facility: A tracking system was implemented to track which applications were used more frequently i.e. email, word processing or internet - Frequency of sessions per week
Recursos y presupuesto
Initial budget was R500 000. To reduce the cost the technology solution was based on Linux and Open Source. Additional funds we received from local ICT companies.
Financiación
Funding for the pilot was provided by the local authority. The project won the International Access to Learning Award. This came with a further US $1m.

All citizens of the City of Cape Town but more importantly the implementation approach was based on targeting the poorest of the poor communities.

Given the user base the project is currently the only project in Cape Town where approximately 14 000 users are currently working in Open Office. Further 144 workstations are currently supported from a central location within the City.
